What is Industry 4.0?

The term Industry 4.0 is increasingly used in today's world, but do we know what it really means?

This name defines the fourth industrial revolution based on internet networks. This formulation hides a modern approach of production plants to technological processes, but also to work methods and the role of the employee.

The main elements of Industry 4.0 include:

  • creating an internal network connecting machines and enterprise components with the help of internet standards,
  • self-improving devices,
  • communicating objects.
Industry 4.0 has significantly changed the approach of industrial plants to processes taking place in their enterprises. The communication of individual machines with each other, and the possibility of their remote control significantly optimized work in industry. Object communication can be divided into two types:

  • vertical implementation of data flow - this means communication from individual elements to the IT department and from the IT department to the elements,
  • horizontal implementation of data flow - information is transferred between devices involved in the production process and the company's production system.

The type of production based on the definition of Industry 4.0 has undoubtedly many advantages. The main ones include improving speed and increasing production efficiency. The speed increase is influenced by the simplification of the production process of many product series due to the possibility of integration of production systems. The improvement of efficiency, however, is possible due to the high availability of production based on data analysis, and the reduction of equipment failure rate.
